UK inheritance tax planner

See how the estate, allowances and gifts become the tax bill.

Build a present-day estate, apply the nil-rate and residence bands, keep gifts on the seven-year clock and test the main ways an inheritance-tax bill may change.

From estate value to estimated bill

Follow every part of the calculation

The planner keeps assets, reliefs, liabilities, gifts and allowances visible instead of presenting one unexplained tax figure.

Estate

Build the net estate

Add property, savings, investments, pensions, business assets and other items, then subtract liabilities and qualifying relief.

Tax-free bands

Apply the available allowances

Use the nil-rate band, residence band, £2 million taper and transferable percentages from a late spouse or civil partner.

Gifts

Put each gift on the seven-year clock

Record exempt, failed and settled gifts, with drop-out dates, taper bands and the annual exemption used.

Charity

Model the reduced 36% rate

See when a charity legacy reaches the 10% test and compare the tax bill with the standard 40% rate.

2026 and 2027 rules

Include the changing treatment

Model the reformed business and agricultural relief allowance and optionally bring pensions into the estate from April 2027.

Reduce the bill

Test the main levers

Compare charity, gifting and pension scenarios against the actual estate figures while keeping the result framed as planning, not advice.

The estate behind the total

Keep every asset and liability traceable

Each estate row records what the item is, whether it is included and why, so the net value can be followed back to the inputs.

  • Assets and debts in separate tables
  • Business and agricultural relief where relevant
  • Spouse and charity exemptions
  • Residence value tied to the residence band
  • Printable estate-and-IHT statement

Gifts do not all behave the same way

See which gifts remain on the clock

The gift register separates exemptions from potentially exempt transfers and gifts already beyond seven years.

  • Annual, small, wedding, spouse and charity exemptions
  • Years remaining and exact drop-out date
  • Taper relief on tax after year three
  • £3,000 annual exemption used and remaining
  • Separate warning where a recipient may be liable

Planning scenarios, not legal advice

See what may change the bill before speaking to a professional

The Reduce page recomputes common scenarios from the figures already entered.

  • Leave at least 10% of the baseline estate to charity
  • Give assets and survive seven years
  • Review the April 2027 pension position
  • Consider life cover written in trust for the estimated bill
  • Flag possible residence-band downsizing relief
  • Keep trusts, deeds and probate outside the calculator

Private by design

Your estate figures stay on your device

The planner runs locally in your browser. It has no account, cloud database or analytics, and it does not upload asset values, gifts or family information.

It does not file anything with HMRC or fetch live valuations. Export a JSON backup when you want to move or preserve the plan.

Frequently asked

Before you buy

Which computers and browsers does it work on?

It works on Windows, Mac and Linux computers in a modern version of Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox.

Does it file an inheritance-tax return?

No. It is an organiser and estimator, not probate, legal or HMRC filing software.

Can it model a married or widowed couple?

It models one estate. A widowed owner can apply transferable nil-rate, residence and qualifying business or agricultural relief percentages from a late spouse or civil partner.

Does the seven-year rule apply to care fees?

No. The seven-year clock is an inheritance-tax rule. Local-authority care-fee assessments use a separate deprivation-of-assets test with no fixed seven-year limit.

Are the results guaranteed?

No. Inheritance tax depends on ownership, exemptions, relief, valuation and future rule changes. Use the planner as a worksheet and take professional advice where needed.

What is included in the download?

The single-file UK Inheritance Tax Planner app, a quick-start guide, and licence and support details. Etsy delivers the download after purchase.
